Yep, we caught three bluefish today at the sticks, I'm about 99.9% positive on the ID.

they were all about 15"-18", all caught on live mullet. We also noticed that about 3 out of every 8 mulet we caught in the net had chunks taken out of them. There were lots of toothy predators in the surf this afternoon.

We caught 2, in the 16"+ range. Didn't know what they were, so we just took pictures and threw 'em back... They looked nice and edible, but I didn't want to take any chances....

They are very edible and are a very popular entree in restaurants along the Atlantic Seaboard. However, they have a high fat content similar to that of spanish mackerel. If you don't like spanish mackerel then you probably wouldn't like bluefish.

Once did an assignment on ol' Pomatomus saltatrix. It's distributed all over the world in temperate seas, but varies a lot in maximum size from one region to another. On the US East Coast it can be as much as 40 lbs, but at PINS I have seen nothing bigger than about 3, and usually only about half that. On the East Coast, they'd call our size of bluefish "snappers," which describes what those trianglular, razor-edged teeth will do to tackle and bait pretty well. Their MO includes cutting finger mullet neatly in half, so you often have to thread the hook length-wise to get a few. They're deadly on shiny swivels, too.

Yes, they're an oily lot, just like Spanish macs, so they do far better on the smoker than in the frying pan, but don't hold that against them. In fact, if I weren't about to put a bunch of pompano in there right now, I'd be more than happy to apply the pecan smoke to a couple of grill-fulls of blues and macs. If you don't have pecan trees in the front yard dropping limbs like manna all year long, save your pecan shells when you crack 'em and use a couple of wet handfulls the next time you get a chance to smoke something. I did not see mention of kings, but they seem just as oily. I have some from a trip with offshore adventures that I fried and it didnt turn out too good, but then I threw some on the old grill and was surprised what a difference it is.

We always get small ones each summer on the upper coast. I actually caught one while fishing for trout at Matagorda.

I have caught them on PINS up to 4 or 5 pounds, but it has been several years.

Here is a photo of +\- 12 lb. bluefish that my nephew Ross Buschang caught on our trip to Maine this summer. I have caught them up to 18 or 20 lbs up there. These fish are terrific fighters and voracious feeders. The locals don't really prefer to eat them since they get oily and strong. This one hit a live mackeral that was about 12 inches long. We were fishing for stripers up against the rocks on one of the many islands that dot the coastline.
