When kayaking in high winds the other day, I knew I'd have to drop anchor off the rear of the yak or face being broadsided by every wave.

So I threaded the anchor rope through the rear carry-handle and the seat clip, and tied the end of the rope to itself about 5' above the anchor.

This allowed me to drop anchor to the rear of the kayak, and retrieve it from the side. As a bonus, it allows easy adjustment of anchor position for facing the boat in a different direction when waves aren't a concern.

It also works for a drift anchor.

It ain't much of a picture, but I hope it illustrates what I'm saying clearly enough.

Good idea Chad. I've done a similar thing but just kinda hooked the back of my yak with the rope. ie... similar results. Thanks............Kyle

Some folks like using an anchor trolley line or a deck-rigging line and spring-snap or carbiners to connect the anchor line to it. It is a line that runs from bow to stern on both sides of the kayak. It allows you to anchor your boat from any direction as well as a safety grab line should you turtle.

I use very small deck cleats or eyes. There are 2 on each side of my kayak located at the rear of my seat and then about 2' behind that. I can snap my drift anchor or my claw anchor to any of the four. If I use the eyes next to my seat, I drift at a 45 degree angle to the wind. That is my preference. If I use the rear eyes or cleats, I am almost straight downwind.

I also tend to fish while sitting side saddle with my legs hanging off the side of yak. With the anchor lines at a 45 degree angle, I can stilll do that and fish downwind instead of cross-wind.....

And all of my lines are within arms reach...........
