What ever you think of.....Don't waste your time trying to get the lead out of an old car battery. Trust me on this one.....I have experience. It takes way too long.
Old cast nets....Cheap lead. Sometimes you can go over to Academy or Wal-mart and pick up some egg sinkers really cheap. Like 3 Pounds worth for like 2 bucks. You might look into that also.
The best place to get lead is a Tire shop....many have said this before. But, there is no place in Corpus Christi that is going to give up their tire weights unless you already have a connection.
Up here in Arlington, Texas near Dallas....I can get lead in 5 gallon buckets for FREE!!!! I have given away loads of lead to friends when I come down. Thats the only benefit being so far away from the coast...LOL _________________ -Skip |

Man, why'd you have to go and tell him that. I was gonna give him an old battery so I wouldn't have to turn it in. _________________ Chad Landry

Shoting ranges are a good source, but be sure to post someone up front to advise you of incoming rounds. All joks aside, I have recovered lots of lead from pistol ranges.

Try going to a scrap metal place, like where people sell there beer cans. They buy from plumbing companys who often sell to the scrappers. Plumbers usually have scrap lead and sometime a lot of it and it is usually clean enough to melt for your sinkers.

With the exception of the battery lead, which will expose you to sulfuric acid and give you a lot of lead oxide (slag) which you would have to separate from your batches, anyway, the suggested sources are good. Other places you might try are shipyards, where scrap lead in the form of sheathing and ballast may be available. Try mixing the purer lead, like the plumbers' and sheathing/ballast forms, with the wheel balance weights. The alloy from the balance weights doesn't shrink very much when it cools, making it harder to remove from sinker molds than pure lead, but it's not as soft as the pure lead, so a mixture gives a durable, yet easily molded, product. So said my father, a Chief Aviation Metalsmith who made thousands of pounds of sinkers that many of you may have purchased before his death.

I am glad this topic came up again, I was going to post a new one but this will do. I deal in scrap metal on the side and finally got around to asking the guy that buys from me if he has any lead. He has about 2,000 pounds. No wheel weights, all good clean lead. Some of it has grease on it, it was coating on large underwater cable. If anyone is interested let me know. He said he would take 18 cents a pound for it. I have never bought lead but I didnt think that was too bad, $18.00 for a hundred pounds.

I have around 40-50lbs of tire weights. Friend of mine gave it to me to make weights but really don't have any interest in making them.
e-mail me if interested
