I am looking at buying a Shimano Symetre 2500 Reel. The particular reel that I am leaning toward has a rear drag as opposed to a drag on the spool (front). I have another less expensive Shimano reel with a rear drag and I really like it when I hook up as I can make a drag change quickly as needed. Question is: Is it just a matter of personal preference or is there some valid reason why one drag system is better than the other? Thanks.

In my opinion($1 and my opinion = cup of coffee most places) the front drag is better. The drag is in the spool. The spool has the line. Most of your bigger and most expensive spinners(Van Staal) don't offer rear drag.Give it a thought. If you hands are wet or you get a splash or two wading I think there is a better chance of water getting into rear drag than a front drag also.Strictly my opinion. How bout that cup of coffee.

On the shimano's I have and have had in the past, I prefer the spool top drag for salt water in the surf or wading, for two reasons:

1. Less water gets in them

2. Easier maintainence. The erar drag system is not very easy to get back together. With the sppol top drag, its much, much easier to get it right the first time when reassemling your reels after a thurough breakdown and cleaning.

The Stradic I have now has got to be the best trout reel I have ever owned! Great drag system, and very easy to maintain.
