I got this email and decided to post it here for some help

My 11 year old son, Joseph, and I tried surf fishing for the first time during Christmas break. We only caught some gaftops, but we loved it. We make it down to Port Aransas about twice a year. Where would you recommend a good place to fish the surf? Also, what rod and reel would be best for my son to use?

Richard it depends on if you have a four wheel drive, what time of the year you visit etc. Any place is good most of the year to catch Whiting. Your 11 year old would like that. As far as rods go it depends upon if you plan on fishing bait, what your target fish is etc.

If your sticking to the Port A area the jetties and The Fish Pass jetties are hard to pass up if reading the water is a prob. . I used to fish there all the time with your basic Bass fishing Equip. and do well enough. Just take some fresh dead shrimp and lots of egg weights and git after it....oh and lots of hooks because those rocks can get hungry
