Hey all, just got stationed at randolph afb via NC outer banks. Been enjoying the 80 degree sunny weather here & thought I'd head down to Corpus & see what it was about. Read some of your reports, didn't sound much different than what I was used to around Hatteras so I opened my surf gear boxes & dusted off my rods.
Arrived to howling 20knot winds & 40 degree weather w/drizzle to ice it all off. wooo cold! I only ended up fishing for about 2 hours. I set my sand spikes up 2 feet in front of my bumper & then would jump in the car with the heat blowing on my legs full blast. I don't currently have a pair of waders, so I braved it in a bathing suite & a heavy coat! - natural waders...
Needless to say I could only stand to keep 2 rods baited in the water at once. Caught 2 whiting, but that was 2 more than I expected. The wind & rip-tides were so heavey that even w/2, 3oz pyramids on each rig my bait would blow right down the beach. So no telling how many hits I missed b/c of the heavy weight, wind and surf. It makes for a delayed hook set when you have to unwrap, get out of the car & get to your pole.
But, despite the nasty weather, I'll be back - when it gets better! |

Its gets alot better. Having been displaced a second time from Corpus to San Antonio, I expect to be making alot of runs that way once it warms up, and I have work and can afford the gas!
Anyway, in Corpus, much of the time you will need surf weights, to hold bottom. There are the variety that have permenant copper wire sticking out from them, which are bent so that they catch bottom, and Nicks variety from Breakaway. Nick's version is really nice, because they hold in all but the toughest conditions, and when pulled free, t he barbs retract down, so they do'nt catch the bottom or seaweed on the way in, which come sargassum season is really handy.
Also, the coast line here is ran by several semicontinous sandbars in the water, adding more structure than most surf areas. You'll need to read the links for reading surf structure.
Welcome to the great state of Texas, and the more than addictive Padre Island Surf fishing. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
