|
|
Been lurking around this site for over a year now learning about the coast. Finally registered. I just bought a new yak from academy for $392.00. Best deal I have found for a new kayak that comes with rod holders, hatch, and seat/backrest. This is what I have already, please let me know what I am forgetting. Hopefully I will be contributing some good reports in the future. Thanks.
1) Kayak
2) EXTRASPORT Eagle PFD
3) Carlisle Black Magic Paddle
4) Waterproof case for cell phone, wallet, keys, etc.
5) 1.5 kg folding anchor and tow rope with float
6) bought some foam practice golf balls to use as scupper stoppers that didn't fit - what do you guys use?
Will be fishing with Curado 200DHSV on a 6'6" Medium Action Falcon rod and a spinning setup if it ever gets real windy. |

You might want to consider some kind of dirft anchor/bag. On windy days or strong current areas, one of these can be very handy and they are very storable. Good luck.

| Buy one of those solid foam pool noodles, cut length equal or slightly longer than scupper depth, carve each piece slightly oversize and similar in contour to your scupper shape and insert into the scupper. Works like a charm! |

Its a plug for the holes in your kayak.
they help keep water out but pool noodles work just fine.

Attach a float to both your anchor and drift sock lines, Also with quick release type fittings that you attach on the rope to your yayak.
This is mainly in case you hook into a large fish so you can quicly release the line cuz when your fighting a big one you dont want it to get tangled in your anchor line. Then with a float on it you can go back & pick it up later after you land the fish. _________________ Fish hard, fish the Bluff. Surrounded by water!

| Probably a dumb question but just wondering----?--when you stop up those holes does it make theyak any less stable? We use ours alot up here on the Nueces River and someone told our boys that the holes in the yak help stabelize it. Ours is very stable, in 15+ ft. water my wife can get our great dane on it when he swims out to her.(a vary funny sight I might add, but she does it without turning over) |

wouldnt think so, mainly keeps the cockpit drier. You'll still get some water in it with the plugs in . I use a large sponge as my bilge pump for that. _________________ Fish hard, fish the Bluff. Surrounded by water!

Scupper holes plugged don't make a yak any less or more stable... just dryer. And your best bet on the plugs is just buy the ones shown above. They work great and they are made by Ocean Kayak. You can order them online at austinkayak.com.
BTW- if any of you are looking for scupper plugs for a WS Tarpon, the yellow OK plugs fit great.
Throw away the 1.5kg folding anchor and pick up a 2kg Manta/bruce/claw anchor at West Marine. And get a drift sock/chute. The 1.5 will not hold in the wind and usually will come loose in heavy tidal movement. If you drift fish at all the chute makes it much easier by slowing the kayak down and keeping it tracking in the same direction.
You have to have a signaling device to be TPWD compliant. Either a signal mirror (AOL cd-roms work great for this) or a whistle. I recommend a whistle because chances are, if you ever need to use the signal, it will be in low light conditions.
You may want to consider some sort of crate to hold your fishing tackle and other stuff. _________________ GoinCoastal aka Cap'nSherbet |

|
|
| The kayak above is the speck version made by ocean kayak exclusively for Academy stores to sell. It is the same exact kayak as the scramber xt angler edition with the exception that the angler only comes in the yellow and the speck only comes in the green. The big thing here is that it is the same yak but the angler edition you buy from any dealer is going to cost about $250.00 more. I talked to the rep at Johnson sports(the people who own the ocean kayak name) and they said they are a limited run for the Academy stores with high traffic. Go get one cheap while you can. I bought two of them. |

| Thanks to all for the great suggestions. I have taken the new yak out twice and have been quite impressed for the price. It's not the fastest or the most comfortable but it does the job and I am very happy overall. If you're looking to get into kayak fishing and money is a little tight I would highly recommend picking up one of these babies at academy while they last. Now all I need is for spring to hurry up and get here and for some fish to cooperate. |

The spec version at Academy has rectangulas scupper hole. The ones in the pic above will not work. _________________ Fish On!!! |
