Ok, I have been floating around the back bays, flats, etc in my Kayak for the past few years now and I want to give the surf fishing on PINS a try. I have never been down PINS as of yet and I don't want to get in a jam... what pointers could ya'll give me and how far down is the 4X4 only sign? Is it at the end of the blacktop? As of right now I don't have a 4wd vehicle and as I am new to this stuff I am not going to chance it and get stuck! I am going to do a weekend camp over night type of thing mid feb. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

The 4x4 sign is about 5 miles down the beach from the blacktop. Depending on the day, and it varies day to day, you can go alot father than that. I don't have a 4x4 but i've taken my mazda navajo(basically a ford explorer) 30 miles down the beach. Make sure to check the tides because just cause you can make it down there on low tide doesn't mean you'll me able to make it back. Ussually it doesn't really start geting bad untill about 16-17miles down (little shell). Just make sure you watch where the tide line is from the day before, and that you can park well above that with out geting stuck for the night.
Good luck

Here are a couple of options, Hook up with someone on the this site that fishes it regularly. But if you would book a trip with Billy Sandifer i think that you could learn alot about how to read the surf, Where and when to fish these areas. It will be worth the money.
Anyway that my two cents.

| I agree with Troutless. You will learn more in one day of fishing the beach with Billy Sandifer -vs- what would take some people years to figure out on their own. The man is a south Texas treasure! |
