This rule is easy to forget but lots of the shark guys have been mentioning rigging horse mullet to use for bait. The big mullet are off limits now through January:
** May not take from public waters, or possess on board a boat, mullet over 12 inches during October, November, December, and January. No limits apply during other months.

I thought I saw a post, or maybe overheard a fish story, where someone was using spanish mackerel for bait. From the TPWD on-line regs:
Bait: Something used to lure any wildlife resource. It is unlawful to use game fish or any part thereof as bait.
Game Fish (includes hybrids or subspecies of fish on this list):
Bass: Guadalupe, largemouth, smallmouth, spotted, striped, white, yellow
Catfish: blue, channel, flathead
Cobia
Crappie: black, white
Mackerel: king, Spanish
Marlin: blue, white
Pickerel
Red drum
Sailfish
Sauger
Seatrout, spotted
Sharks
Snook
Spearfish, longbill
Swordfish, broadbill
Tarpon
Trout: brown, rainbow
Wahoo
Walleye

Does this rule apply only in Texas? I caught a bit of that Monster Shark tournament the other day, and I thought I heard them say that they use Bluefish and Mackerel for bait (and for chum). On a related note, last weekend driving up and down the beach, I did see an un-cast rod sitting in a holder, with a tail-section of a good-size smack rigged on the hook. Breaking the rules is one thing, but being that blatant about it?

Yes, what Carl B posted were specific regulations pertaining to Texas. The mackerel used in the tournament could have been Atlantic Mackerel which are commonly used for bait on the East and Gulf Coasts or Atlantic Bonito which are nicknamed "Boston Mackerel". Regulations can vary widely in each state and then there are the federal regulations that must be considered. |

At some point you have to start listening to your concience. I would hate to see what the fishing would look like if it were still like the old pictures I have seen with hundreds of tarpon or other game fish nailed to a board |

FWIW - Last weekend there was a Game Warden cruising down PINS. Don't know if he was checking people or not - each time I saw him I was driving. |
