http://www.texasmonthly.com/mag/issues/2006-01-01/feature2.php

This months access code is 'midland'

Texas Monthly is still bitter their candidate john kerry lost the last election, to a Texas candidate. So we get 'Retail Politics', authored by s.c. gwynne. Typical liberal rag antics republican vs. dem, Cabela's vs. whole foods, Buick vs. Volvo. And all of a sudden I am labeled a right-wing, red-state, beer-guzzling, flag-waving Bambi killer. My children wear blue jeans and gimme caps... I am a pilgrim. A seeker. And am scolded because I pack my family into a crammed F-150 and drive 200 miles to buy a crankbait and some Tink's #69 Doe-In-Rut buck lure gel.

Why do I shop Cabela's? Because texas monthly tells me, 'At Cabela's you learn how to kill things with maxium efficiency...'

s.c. gwynne penned the phrase 'The things we buy suggest - as never before - the kinds of people we are, who our friends are, and what we value.' Poor s.c., never had a family or friends.

s.c. wrote an article about floating down the Devil's River. He mentioned it was 'scary', and others should not attempt it. Been there, done that fella... one of the best trips of my life. Glad you lived to tell about it. You might find this amusing, but I am an original Cabela's customer and sometimes I spend more annually at whole foods, then I do at Cabela's. Did I mention I'm conservative.

s.c. goes on to say, 'the Bushies came up with the idea that the best indicator of how a person was going to vote...' Let me stop the quote right there. For starters, you live in Austin, Texas. George W. Bush is the president. The term 'Bushie' is a little immature... but if you want to continue to use it, I'll refer to you as a 'left leaning libbie'. People voted the way they voted, because they wanted a leader with morals and not one that threw his purple hearts over the fence. Yet you are still bitter. That's o.k., it's your media outlet, and I am sure all of your advertisers cater to the middle class. Pardon me while I spoon some caviar into my mouth. Pass the dom please. I bet you like the French. Paris? May be you should move there.

s.c., one of your best quotes, 'They are selling highly customized products to people who buy them not only because they want them but also because the products tell them who they are as individuals'. Wow. Does the editor not proof your work? Based on that statement, if you work for a liberal rag, you are a liberal.

Later in the article, I'm called a 'knuckle-dragging Bambi killer' and al gore gets another 5 minutes of fame because the author is still bitter about the 2000 election too.

s.c. out did himself on this quote: 'At Cabela’s what is being sold is an idea of prelapsarian America, a country of forests and trees and clear streams and mist rising on purple mountains, a more primitive, self-reliant, and nobler America where everyone hunted for meat, where women knew how to shoot, field-dress, and cook a wild boar, and where pointy-headed liberals from Connecticut were not trying to banish God from our schools. Cabela’s is about guns and gun culture and is one of the largest single donors to the National Rifle Association Foundation.' Yep. s.c. busted me. But I never called a liberal 'pointy-headed'.

s.c. goes on to promote patricia aburdene's new novel, megatrends 2010, saying aburdene does not mention Cabela's... because they 'embrace the idea of bow hunting for elk and blasting cute little doves from the sky'.

Getting back to the authors tour of Cabela's: 'Behind the camping section, a jokey animatronic deer welcomes you to a laser shooting gallery that reminds you, in case you had forgotten, of just exactly how much fun it is to shoot things. In immediate proximity to these themed attractions—the bait, if you will—is the hook: several acres of camouflage clothing and accessories, enough ordnance to retake Baghdad' Again, the anti-hunter stance... and a subliminal reference to Iraq. s.c. is hittin on all cylinders here. And then, before he loses his audience, we get 'Cabela’s stands for hunting and killing things; it also stands for responsible stewardship of the environment. And it wants you to know that.

s.c. says, if you didn't vote for gore and kerry, and you hunt, you are a killer! Don't worry, texas monthly and the ny times aren't going to banish God from schools. They might lie about Bush's records, and they might re-write history, but God will always be safe in school.

Once again, s.c. out does himself here, '(Whole Foods does carry products—notably its “365” line—that are competitive with supermarkets.)' In other words, if you are poor democrat, you can still shop with pride at whole foods.

Note to dems, according to s.c., you have got to be smarter,
'The beliefs that drive such purchases are, of course, ultimately political, and anyone who still doubts that people who drive Volvos are Democrats or that Buick owners are Republicans need only look at the staggeringly successful Republican get-out-the-vote campaign in the last presidential election.'

And Matthew Dowd pipes in “Traditional political science says that you can predict who a person is going to vote for based on his income or whether he is pro-choice or pro-life, for taxes or against,”
Brilliant! I always thought rich people voted republican and less fortunate voted dem, republicans voted pro-life, dems pro-abortion, reps against tax, dems for tax and welfare... and now you are telling me you can tell how a fella is going to vote based on a retail shopping experience? Again, Brilliant dude, I mean dowd!

dowd goes on to give us, “Cabela’s gave us a way to reach the middle-class white Republican, exactly the crowd that the Democrats have lost. You would think that the male vote, working class, with low income, would be a Democrat. But they are hunters and fishermen and believe in property rights." That is why they pay him the big bucks, who in their right mind would of thought us killers actually believed in property rights.

And of course the author had to play the 'gay' card, "Some of the data is wonderfully unpredictable: The TV show Will & Grace, for example, which centers on the lives of a gay man and a straight woman, leans heavily Republican. It’s the Republican women who are watching it." s.c., let me help you out, republicans are against gay marriage. But nice try.

s.c., your article was very entertaining. kinky needs a campaign manager and I think you are the man for the job.

I quit them over twenty years ago,and that not soon enought. The are so liberal, they can't not report anything without their liberal bias.

www.corpusfishing.com

www.corpusFISHING.com

perhaps your post would be better suited at

www.texasmonthlysucks.com

Please don't give that shuck and jive about it "relating" to hunting or fishing (I'll give you the benefit of the doubt even though this is not really www.corpusHUNTING.com). Your post was more than 80% irrelevent to this website. Why would you come to this website to complain about fags anyway? I really don't see the point of your post.

Hey Guys,
Let's just keep it to fishing and fish related issues. Liberals aren't going to sway conservatives and conservatives are not going to sway liberals and arguing about it here serves no purpose than to cost me bandwidth.
If you don't like Texas Monthly don't buy it.
After Libby Averyt's rant on "rednecks" in the Caller Times I cancelled my subscription.
