I remember reading an article or thread about driving on PINS a year or so ago and mention was made of a "Sand Anchor" that could be used to winch a truck out of a hole. The general idea was the harder you pulled the more it dug into the sand thus giving a better anchor point for the winch.

Does this ring a bell for anyone and if so where could I find one?

Archer,
Idon't know if your talking about buring your spare tire with a cable attached to it and then wrenching your self out. I never seen it done, but Iv'e heard about it.

PT That looks like it would work great, I was hoping for something a little less expensive though Confused

Anybody ever tried a plain old boat anchor designed to dig in?

I helped a guy winch out a 14k pound dump truck at South Padre about 10 yrs ago. We buried an 8ft solid steel pipe behind the truck - attached cables at each end and winched it right out. I couldn't beleive my eyes. First try came right out.

Doesn't look like it would be too hard to make.

just use a large fluke boat anchor. bury it in the sand and it will dig in. attach to winch and watch out if cable snaps - it can kill.

The fluke anchor is exactly what I had in mind, I just wasn't sure if it would work or if I would find myself in a world of hurt miles from nowhere.

Anybody tried that before?

A friend of mine and I stuck a 3,300 pound beach buggy on the back side of Matagorda Island one time. Didn't have a winch and got it out. This buggy was a Hemi powered two wheel drive buggy with a one ton truck rear end and rear tires about twenty inches wide. What happened was we slid into a marsh pond we did not see and the front tires wound up in the water with the fan of the engine clipping the water. The rear tires were right at the waters edge.
O.K. ---Getting unstuck! Walked a long way to an oil rig and borrowed a two inch piece of drill stem about six foot long. Got out behind the buggy and drove it into the sand as far as possible on an angle sloping away from the buggie. We had a true one inch diameter 100% nylon rope about ninty feet long. Tied one end to the three inch rear steel bumper and went around the pipe in the sand and back to the bumper. Tightened the rope with a long hydrolic jack and tied this end to the bumper. We had another piece of pipe about four or five feet long and put that in the middle of the two ropes half way between the buggy and the pipe in the ground and twisted the rope until enough pressure was applied to the rear tires that we could drive out. Same thing as winding up a rubber band.
Ingenuity can get one out of a lot of trouble if there seems to be no other way.
Just be sure to take some gear when you go to the beach. A long strong 100% nylon rope will get Ya out of a lot of trouble.

The PullPal is a get tool thanks for the link. I was thinking of making something like it and was modeling it from a tool that we used to use in the military to replace the track back on the M113 Tanks.
