First time in three years of fishing PINS, I got skunked!!
Wind was 25- 30mph, surf rough, cold, extreme tides and no fish.
The good thing that came out of this weekend was...after coming out of the Y Sat, the tides Sat night pushed all the debris to the dunes....smooth beach on the way out. Surf was still extremely high, but once it goes back to normal, it will be smooth driving.
I'll be back to fill the cooler soon......
See ya on the sand,

You are a better man than I. I wouldn't have even fished in the bay on Saturday. It was cold and miserable. I did fish off the folks canal in Padre but I was protected from the wind. Only a few ankle biters there too.
I bet you froze at Yarborough.
Sorry for the skunking. |

Yes it was a cold one, but we came prepared. The campfire was great, food was hot and the tent blocked the wind. I hope I don't have many more of these trips in the future, but it was a day on the beach.
I'm still trying to figure out what folks see in Yarborough Pass, doesn't seem like much but silt, grass and man that mud stinks. We did see a nice Buck out there, must have been at least a 10 pointer. It circled around and kept an eye on use before heading down the road. I think I'll stick to the beach from now on, but it did keep us dry from the high tides, I hope the few folks that were out there with us didn't get swamped.
We had this trip planned for months and we decided to go for it. Our next trip down can only get better LOL I know I didn't scare the first timers with me away, they are already talking out another trip down in Jan. I guess I will be a little more picky on the weekend.

It used to have lots of grass, some sand and little mud except once you got close to the channel. It was a nice spot until about two years ago. Still good fishing but not near as pretty without the grass.

and I'm glad we decided to check out the "Y". We would have been ok at the 17mm or 41mm, but anywhere else and you would have had to drive into the dunes. Folks really need to have a plan for weekends like this. New folks need to read the board when coming into the park and stake out a place to camp.....I think anywhere except the 17mm, 41mm or Y and your camp would have been washed out to sea.
Hardhead,
Maybe a different time and conditions, but it wasn't happening Sat and the only way we would have gotten any fish was if we prayed at the "alter" and they fell from the sky. Thanks, but no thanks, I'll stick to the surf.

The "Y" this time of year, and during the cooler water temps, the reds and black drum are thick back there, the only catch is, I have found is at night and the bite wont start untill well after dark and will last until sunrise. I dont have a clue why this is but it works for me every time except....when the winds cease...there as to be at least a slight ripple on the water. Ole Carl & I have both seen the winds just stop and so does the bite but if the winds start back up just ever so lightly the fish will turn on again.I have been working on the "Y" for many years now and I can always fill the cooler with reds & blacks. But not many want to make the 150 yard wade and stand out there in the middle of the night...But it works. But, like you, I prefer the surf too...But it has sure been slow the past week. Gonna give it another go in the am at the hi banks. Driving is great now at mid day.
