Hit the sand at 1:30 Thurs. afternoon and met up with my brother and one of our buddies at the wide spot at the 16 1/2 & set up camp. Water was rough but clear. Lots of finger mullet. Caught some mullet for bait and set out lines in the 2nd gut. Rip was roaring from north to south in the first gut, but managed to keep 3 lines out for 4 1/2 to 5 hrs. Nada. Retired to the camp. A friend from Houston showed up and then my cousin & a friend from Austin & another friend from Dallas in their camper showed up around 11 pm.
Woke up Fri. to a near slick gulf. Tried gold spoons & topwaters for 45 min. without a bump. Set out live finger mullet past the 3rd bar. Vern stopped by & showed me their sharks on his digicam (way to go, Vern!). I headed in to HEB in the Bluff. By the time I got back, my cousin had landed a 33" & a 31" spanish mack & 1 pompano. Baca landed a 26" smack, & my bro got a 16 1/2" speck. Several whiting & skips. Bite stopped when the tide turned incoming.
Saturday morning the surf was a little rougher & the wind had shifted but water still clear. Tried artificials again. Again nada. My brother's first line set yielded a 26" red on live mullet. Weed was picking up & the rip was increasing so I set my long rod in a holder on the 3rd bar. Rebaited twice & on the 3rd try hooked up. Fought the fish for 45 min. & finally beached a 25 lb. jack crevalle. That sucker wore me out. Shortly after, while a friend was releasing my jack, my brother hooked up & landed another 25 lb. jack. Only took him 15 mins. I guess he's in better shape. No, I know he's in better shape. No more takers for a while until my brother landed a 27" red. Bite died when the tide turned.
Probably our most successful trip yet. Weather was gorgeous. Cool temps. Low humidity. No mosquitos. Good friends. AND the Astros won.
What a weekend to remember. |

What bait are you using when you catch those jacks? _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.

Rabbit,
All fish were caught on live finger mullet, including the pompano. I tried fishbites & peeled shrimp in the 1st & 2nd guts Fri. & Sat. morning on a small J hook below a slip sinker & got numerous bumps & shrimp pieces stolen, but could never get a hookup. BTW, no hardheads caught all weekend.

I went out sunday and caught five reds. Had 2 lines out with live mullet and one with cut mullet fishing the first gut and nothing hit the live mullet all the reds hit the cut mullet. And it was great no hardheads _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.
