I was wondering what kind of gear do most of the people on this board use? I will be stationed in Corpus Cristi in a few months and would like to start surf fishing. I want to get a rod and reel that is good quality and can withstand a strike from a 4'-6' shark. I saw this picture.
What kind of reel does he have? I would appreciate any help.

Thanks
Aaron

Not the best view of the reel...almost looks like a jigmaster.

Anyhow, I would suggest a PENN 113HLW. This is a wide 4/0 (common name). it will hold roughly 450 yards of 40# test. This will give the ability to wade out to the first bar and cast or if you have a yak, yak out to the third bar and drop on either side.

A wide 4/0 will handle most fish except the bad boys. The biggest I have caught on one is a 9'6" lemon shark. The one I in my avatar pic.

For the rod, I would go with something in the 10' range. Ocean Master makes some quality commercial rods. The 10' or even the 12'6" model is excellent choice. You can also invest in a custom built rod. Roy's Bait and Tackle would be a good place in Corpus to get input on what it would cost to get one built. $250 would be a good price for a 10' custom rod made from quality materials.

Coming into Padre Island from Corpus Christi, as soon as you make it over the Kennedy Causeway Bridge, on the right had side there is a small shopping center. If you pass the Shell Gas Staion you have pass it. In that shopping center is a Shop Called "Breakaway". Ask the owner Mr Nick to show you his new 13 foot rod called LDX. Then you might go with a DaiwaSHV-30 reel for it. I believe that is what on the rod on the above picture. Breakaway specializes in long casting activities for the bigger fish.
