I think I have a hook problem, but maybe a line or rod. I have been yak fishing in lakes and in the bays. Today I lost my third reel screamer in a row. I have had no problem with the under 5 lbs fish but when I get the big hit (x2 gold spoon x1 on treble hooked mullet) he throws the hook... my drag is tight... my rod is medium action... I have caught big fish in the past but these reds (or maybe a stripper) seem to own me.

Help

My wife won't let me hang out with strippers anymore.

I use circle hooks for all bait now. I like the wide gap kind. Owners are good.

Not sure about what to say for the spoon though.

I have been landing 25"+ reds on a medium action 6'6" rod w/8 lb test. Secret is the wide gap and circle hooks. Landed a 27.5" red sunday morning that weighed in at 9lbs 4oz. Love the fight. PM me lets go sometime. Catching them from a yak on live mullet.

Thank you I will try the circle hooks - If I lost one more I was going to go hand to hand.

I will have to try that. I started playing them slower to keep their head under water. It seemed if they got their head out of the water the would open their mouth real wide and start shaking and out would come the hook. Very Happy

replace the hooks on your spoons with excalibur rotating treble hooks. i replace all the treble hooks on my spoons and topwaters with these. you'll be amazed how many more solid hook ups you'll get.

gamakatsu 8/0 octopus circles for reds.
