State looks at fishing changes

In addition to deciding future policy on seagrass preservation today in Austin, Texas Parks & Wildlife commissioners are expected to start a process that could result in several changes to our fishing regulations.

None of the fisheries changes would be decided this week. I'll tell you later how they voted.

Among the proposals is one that would do away with the annual oversized-redfish tag. The current rule allows anglers to keep two so-called oversized red drum within a license year in addition to a three-fish daily allotment.

Instead, under this proposal we'd be allowed to keep one redfish greater than 28 inches each day that we fish.

One option would allow this oversized redfish to be part of a three-fish daily bag. Another option would allow the oversized redfish to be taken in addition to a three-fish daily bag.

I'm unsure why TPW wouldn't simply increase by one fish the daily bag on slot-size reds (20-28 inches). I get the sense that many oversized redfish that are killed by anglers end up in the garbage. Adding an edible-size redfish as part of a four-fish daily bag would help prevent at least some of this waste. But this option isn't on the table.

If given the go ahead by commissioners, one of these two options would enter the public-input process and ultimately could be adopted or killed at a later date.

Another proposal involving redfish would allow guides to keep a limit of redfish during charter trips. Currently, guides may not retain any fish regulated by a daily limit during charter trips. But this is a relatively new regulation.



I spoke with the TPW today and they said this topic would be under " Public Discussion" on their website soon. They would tell the results of the meeting.
