Any of you guys want to pontificate on the affect of tides on surf fishing? I've learned alot through years of trial and error (and reading this board), but this is one subject I am pretty well clueless on. I can't say with any certainty that I've ever noticied any difference in the bite related to tides, but this is why I'm asking.
Anyway, it has been a busy year and I haven't been down since the blizzard of 2004, but Ill finally be on the beach Thanksgiving. Looks like low tides and dark of moon. I plan to fish 'til my arms wear out.

White dodge deisel with Lance camper. We'll take the camper down as far as the driving allows, then unhook and cruise for clear water and pomps, or whatever the surf will yield. Stop and say hello if you like.

John

What I have found regarding tides is that as long as the water is moving the fish will bite so long as you are where the fish are. They seem to develop lock jaw on a slack tide. I like fishing structure such as jetties and piers on an outgoing tide and the wade and first guts on an incoming tide. Where I have trouble is with moon phases but have never really given it much thought until recently.

Thanks. Yeah, the more I think about it the more it seems that incoming tides have been better for me, especially if there is a deep wade gut to work. What is a slack tide? Is that just a tide that is not moving much water in or out?

Whats u take on the moon phases, i know its best at night on a full moon, but how bout during the day on a new moon. I have always ponderd this, dont know much about the moon tidal phases though. Seems I have caught fish on all phases, but I guess it would increase ur odds?

Slack is the period between incoming and outgoing tides when the water movement stops.
Also, here is something that'll help someone, something my dad taught me many years ago. At the south jetty in Port A, fish the channel side on an outgoing tide and the surf side on an incoming tide. It has always worked for me.

Here is what I have observed over the years mostly on the upper coast.

This is generally speaking of coarse.

Big incoming tides in the fall equals bullred fish - Mostly at night in September and October.

Big outgoing tides in the late spring and searly summer equals sharks and bullreds.

Early morning high tides in the summer equals speckled trout.

Trout will sometimes turn on a high slack tide if the incoming tide was strong.

Any moving tide in the spring with good water anytime of day or night equals speckled trout. I have racked up on trout on some very weak tides.

This is a big fat theory of mine and may or may not be true. Your hardier fish like reds and sharks will most likely feed on strong tides.....Your less hardier fish like speckled trout will more likely feed best on weaker tides. However, big trout seem to act more like redfish as they mature and may be better to catch in strong tides.

I know moon phase is important. I have tried going by the lunar feeding periods the past couple of years and have not done as good. I do know that big trout are more likely to bite around the new and full moons. It seems they will bite as the moon is rising.....However, I am not a big trout expert. That is just what I have noticed the few times I have seen a big trout caught.

I have gone back to fishing the tides again and doing better again. The tides and moon work together anyway.
