I picked up two on e-bay several months ago. Got them for around $50 each after the shipping charges. They were NIB with two spare spools and storage bag. I've used them twice in the surf and think they will be my reel of choice from now on. Good luck.

Thanks George, I've put them through the rings and they shine fine. That tarpon this weekend really proved their worth. I dunk'em and soak'em and they still keep tickin. Unfortunately, I lost one off my yak this weekend, and I need another anyway so i'll be checkin ebay.
If anyone else has info please let me know. Thanks.........Kyle
Ps, I now have teathers for all my rods on my yak....usually about 3 |

I have got a bid on the smaller one, the 6500. I thought it would be a good yak reel for chasing Spanish etc. Kyle, do you think it is undergunned or are you targeting something like kings Tarpon out of your yak?
I would probably rig it with power pro. That 7500 seems pretty heavy at over a pound a half but then again if I wanted to go after tarpon and jacks the extra line capacity would be necessary.

Hey Tyler, if another fish hadn't cut my 30#PP after 25 minutes of fighting it from the beach(not the yak), I have no doubt that I could have landed that 5' fish(maybe bigger) . The first run was a litle scary so I instantly started cranking down the drag so as not to let the fish get too much line out and still be green. After about 100yds I turned him. Then it was gain a little lose a little, but I woulda one....And that was on my 6500 that has been underwater as much time as it has out of water,LOL! I'm a firm believer in these reels now. I've had them for a year and tested them thoroughly. Now, if I had known there were tarpon in that bait pod I woulda picked up my 7500, but this just shows what these reels are capable of handling. I bought 3 last night because I love these reels. I think you can guess what I recomend. Good luck............Kyle
Ps, the only problem I've found with them is that occasionally I get a wind knot in my braid, but that happens to all spinners with braid. I think I have this problem solved though. Just be a little more carefull when I cast and make sure the line wraps tight at the beginning of each retrieve. |

Maybe Rob will go in halfsies with me on a bid for two 7500's. I have heard somewhere the yellow ones which they don't make any longer are better than the black ones. Any truth to that?

I heard the same thing about the yellow being better built than the black. I have two of the black 6500s and haven't had any problems yet. I haven't hooked into anything to brag about with these reels yet but have brought in tons of skips and a dozen of so trout. I like the way the drag feels and they cast like a champ.

| I have both colors and the only thing I notice between the two is the retrieve speed(the black "GV" is faster retrieve). Never had a problem with either. They have the exact same everything except for the gears. I might be wrong, but they look the same to me and i don't see why they would make one " better " ?..............Kyle |

is that 6500 about the right size to go on a 7' trout stick? man these reels look great, and add all the good reviews from you guys, i gotta have one.
now when they say waterproof, does that mean you can rinse it? and if so does that mean if it were to get dunked, you rinse it off and no harm done? if this is truly the case, why isn't everyone using these things?
mainly i am just concerned about the size and if it will match up on a 7' all star or red killer II rod. also are they very heavy? i see that the shipping weight is 1 pound, but i dont know that that is much heavier than my shimano sahara 4000.
thanks in advance

I emailed you the message about the reels a month ago. I knew you were happy with them so, I bought the 2 sizes available. The black and silver(GV) are the faster of the Nautil reels and I bought PowerPro to put on them. I will put the 6500gv on the 9' Tica and the 7500gv on the 10' Tsunami rod I bought at Academy. I won a Penn 6500ss here at work and ordered a 9' Custom Allstar rod for it.
I'll be on the beach in October (8,9,10,23,24,25) for several weekends. I can't wait to get on the water. My yak has only been to the lake and I want to try it in the surf.
I hope to hook up with you and the others soon. Ever since my Dad passed away (June 24, 2004) I've been wanting to get away. He taught me how to fish and I'm grateful for that.
Not all Dads spend time with their kids like they should and he was my Dad and not just my father.

lonestarbeer,
These thing are supposed to work underwater but I'm not brave enough to try it in the surf. From the looks of them I don't think it would hurt it. I know I don't worry about them at all when I get splashed by a wave. I just rince them off at the end of the day instead of after everytime my other reels get wet.

I lost one of my 7500s off the yak last year and found it 10 mins later. Still works fine today and all I did was rinse it. When I'm sharkin from the shore and yaking baits all day I keep a 6500 with a spoon tied to the yak at all times for the entire weekend incase bait pops up, when it does i'm ready. The reel stays wet all weekend and still catches big fish.
George, I've used mine in the surf chest deep in 3'+ seas. Needless to say it worked fine and was underwater often. I own a Van Stall but am afraid to use it anywhere other than aboat,LOL! It's really shiney!
BigDaddy, use the Penn for a yak anchor and put your 7500 on that new rod. I'll be down in Oct so I'll hope to see ya there. Email me before ya go so I know to look for ya. What kinda yak did ya get?..........Kyle |

Lonestar, they are new reels and unfortunately they are "mitchel reels" so nobody thinks about them. I bought 3 a year or so ago to try out the "waterproof" claims because I needed a yak reel. Well, now the testing is done and I've been telling all my friends. There's only one other "waterproof" reel out there and they cost too much to use in the surf (VS, and I don't take mine out there). I just look at it shine on my desk ................Kyle |
