State to share coastal funds
By Nick Nelson Caller-Times
August 12, 2005
Nueces County will likely get a chunk of the $240 million awarded to Gulf Coast states in a comprehensive federal energy bill, Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson said Thursday.
"We received kind of a windfall of $60 million a year for four years," Patterson told the Corpus Christi Rotary Club.
The state will receive 65 percent and 18 coastal counties will receive the remaining 35 percent, he said. The amount each county receives depends on a formula that factors in the county's total coastline, its population and its distance to the Outer Continental Shelf.
Congress authorized the money through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program. The funds will be used to offset the effects of oil and gas production on Gulf Coast states.
That can range from importing sand for depleted beaches to constructing new boat ramps or parks, Patterson said. The improvements would be a boon to businesses and residences along the coast, he said.

Let just make sure it doesn't get used to build parking lots! _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

| $60 million a year sounds great. It will be interesting to see how much of the money is used to replenish sand in front of seawalls and build parking lots. In other words, destroy the natural beauty rather than preserve it. I am courious on how oil and gas production depletes sand on our beaches or how parks and boat ramps will offset the effects of oil and gas production. I am not an expert in this area, but I do not see the connection. Was this money attached to the Energy Bill? Sounds like a lot of tax dollars used to buy votes for a major piece of legislation that should have been passed without the "pork". Maybe after my trip to PINS next weekend I can post a message about all the fish I caught and I will be in a much better mood. |

I suggest you start contacting your county commissioners and the GLO coastal stewardship division right away to let them know what you want done. I assure you that city councils and developers are already hard at it.
You could always put in for a grant to open up those passes if you could figure out the economics and logistics. That's what the money is for.
