Hello All, I'm brand new to this website and love what I see so far. My Dad, myself and 2 brothers are heading down to Big Shell for the first time this weekend. I was wondering if people can tell me what kind of cell phone service you get down that far. My wife is a big time worrier and a family friend was just killed in an accident last week so she is paronoid about me being out of contact. I appreciate it.

Thanks,

Not very good reception. I usually have to climb a tall sand dune to get signal. Most fisherman use CB's and 2 way radios to stay in contact. I always have the coast guard # handy just incase.

Sprint works sporadically and sometimes you have to climb up on the dunes to make a call but if you had to make a call most times you can after a small hike.

Nextel, nope doesn't work.

Sprint is what we have and we can reception generally down to Little Shell, and to Big Sheel if you climb a dune.

There is also a antennae booster for Sprint phones that is suppossed to work really well too. Don't know who makes it or were to get it, but someone on this board probably knows.

Sprint is spotty along the lentgh.. Once I get to the Mansfield jetties I can usually get a decent signal. A CB is highly recomended. It is the fastest way to get help from fellow beach travelers.

Anyone know about any of the other companies? I have Verizon and I get no signal till I reach the Port Mansfield jetties. It usually fades away before I get off the pavement too.

After 11 miles you will not get sprint reception unless you are standing on the mansfield jetty. Last weekend as soon as I came off the rocks no signal.

I have several Sanyo dual band phones with Sprint service and usually don't have any trouble calling out. You might have to climb a dune or get on top of your truck in many areas between the 7mm to about the 50mm.

Pins 1mm to about 6 MM - digital signal
Pins 6 to around 55mm - analog roaming
Pins landcut - digital signal

I used my Verizon phone about 23 miles down PINS last year, but had to stand on a dune.

Most all cell phones will work fine on the beach if you add an external antenna. They're not cheap when you include the cable to match your phone but they work

I presently don't have one but know people who do and they can talk almost everywhere on the beach. we're going to order one and put on the truck.

Do a Google search on "Cell Phone Antennas" and take a look at what's available for your particular phone.

Hope this helps.
