| Some people call them shad, some call them menhaden. I would be throwing one of the new mirrolure catch 5 's. They are shaped like the fish and are topwater plugs. |

I'm with guest, watermelon shad. If they were fairly close I'd bust out a Number 5 Tony Acetta.
Torpedo and I spotted a ball of these guys just within casting distance and pulled out red after red with a slab of whiting and shrimp. The fishing was good until a fella from Dalls pulled up Dukes of Hazzard style and waded out to the second bar infront of the pod. As we looked at him from the shore dumbfounded he yelled back at us "you gotta throw somthing shiny at them" despite him seeing us throw cut bait at them. Needless to say we didnt cast at him but in a righteous sort of way the bait ball swam out deeper then he could cast.
And I don't remember how we knew he was from Dallas either... _________________ Erick- Cast till it MHz

| The one on the left is a scaled sardine. The ones with the stripes are young jacks, possibly jack crevalles. This website will show you where to purchase the most useful book for fish I.D. in our area, Hoese and Moore's "Fishes of the Gulf of Mexico." |

| Man I'll never forget that potlicker from Dallas. Sure was funny casting over him from the beach into the pod when all he could do was stand on the bar out of casting range. |

Johnny French is right on the dot on both of them. At first i thought the ones on the right were perch. Watermelon shad have a wider body on them. _________________ admit to nothing and deny everything |

I agree with Johnny French. My first impulse when I saw the pic is that the bait on the left is a "Pilchard"....or at least that's what we've usually called them. But, if you look up "Scaled Sardine" certain references tell you they are also called Pilchards.
The terms Shad, Pilchard, Pogie are often used generically or as "catch-all" terms for baits such as some use the term "Pargo" to describe about 4 or 5 different types of snapper. |

The 2 spines on the ventral side (belly) are the key characteristic for fish in the Jack family (Carangidae).
