I live out in Flour Bluff on Jamaica street. I went outside earlier today to check out the water and this is what I found all in it. Can anyone identify this stuff?
Here's a few pics...

My daughter is working with the TP and W office that works on things like that and they checked that out today. Sort of like ooze. The governor called their office too after calls saying there was an oil spill on Laguna Shores. For anyone wanting to know TP and W believes this is some sort of algae bloom.
Shawne went out to take more pictures at 8pm tonight. She said it is really thick gooey stuff.
Thanks for the great photos! |

Was there any bright lights in the sky and then strange men showing up wearing all black? |

| I live on Tahiti St. on the same canal system. I noticed the stuff today and watched it float by. I have also noticed the dead sea weed on Laguna Shores has had a pink color to it for about a week. I have seen algae in the canals before, but the whole pink thing is a little uncomfortable. I did see a state truck by the canals today. |

Oh I forgot to mention that I talked to my neighbor across the canal and he said that his bait he had in the water had died since this morning when it usually last about 2 days. Also it does have some sort of smell to it, I was starting to think redtide because from what I have heard redtide has awkward fishy like smell to it, this does also.

Here are few more photos my daugter took last night off of Carribean and Jamaica Streets in the Bluff.
She says it is some sort of algae but will get more from TPW as they work on it.

| On the canal between Tahiti and Samoa it is gone. I wonder if people over fertilizing their yard had something to do with the bloom? |

Makes sense that its an algae bloom, learning from many mistakes made in keeping salt aquariums.
When there is too much protein or sugar in the water from leftover food and waste in an aquarium, the algae have more food to feed from and rapidly multiply. A water change is necessary immediately at that point as well as a lot of scrubbing. This looks similar to the red slime that plagues salt water aquarium enthusiast. I had that stuff attack my aquarium twice, and it chokes the oxygen out of the water in a matter of hours when it blooms, causing me to loose all my fish both times. It also drastically changes the alkalinity of the water as well. The odor was tremendously bad. I learned not to fed as much and bought a better filter for removing proteins and sugars from the water.
We have sargassum rotting in the bays, giving off nutrient on which algaes feed. Not to mention all the small living creatures that traveled in on the fresh stuff and died with their food supply. Without any regualr rains lately, we are not diluting those nutrients enough. This could have led to this algae bloom, and would explain the smell as well as the quick death of the bait fish.
If the odor begins to feel like it is irritating your lungs or nasal passages, get away from it immediately, in case it is releasing any toxins. |

Like to see how the sargassum on the beach gets across the island and into the laguna. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.

It comes in with the incoming tides at Port A, and other passes. I have seen sargassum wash up here in downtown Corpus Christi. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.
