|
|
To all, please be careful of cuts and fishing in our area of the woods. A friend of mine's spouse is in the hospital from a cut and infection during fishing. We shouldn't be frightened from fishing after hearing these stories, but we need to be cautious as possible and practicable. I just spoke with my friend Daiquiri. She tells me that Captain Richard was guiding a customer. She doesn't know where. Apparently, he got cut at the trout's gill.
Below is a email that I just received this morning about it.
"I've just talked with Daiquiri and have a few more pieces of the puzzle to
share with you. This is a very grotesque infection but I feel people need
to know the severity. I will spare you the gory details but know that there are particular words that describe this infection that cannot be explained any other way and are not appealing.
John cut his hand Saturday evening while fishing. He knew something was out of the ordinary Sunday morning so went to the emergency room. Test results show that he has contracted a Strep A bacteria that targets the lymph nodes which was contracted from the water where he was fishing. This bacteria is extremely aggressive and begins rotting the flesh within hours of contracting it. John was finally back in his room about 10:00 last night after completing his second surgery since this ordeal began on Saturday evening. The doctor was able to clean out all of the rotted tissue and squeezed out as much of the infection that could be seen from a 3 inch wide black path from his left hand/thumb up to his armpit and lymph nodes. His temperature is finally down to ~100.4. This infection can be fatal and the doctor does not feel he is out of the woods yet.
The doctor began growing another culture yesterday with the results not
expected until this afternoon (it takes 24 hrs. to grow). The antibiotics
they are giving John aren't working. The medical staff is trying to find
"the one" that will stop this ravaging infection. Depending upon today's
progress or lack thereof, John may have another surgery tomorrow to remove more of the rotted flesh.
Know that his thumb has already turned black and is the size of a small
sausage. Having been through a very similar personal experience not long ago, I know this is not good and the chances are great that he may loose his thumb. This is an extremely painful infection. The wounds are being left open so that they can be allowed to drain and cleaned more frequently. The doctor would like to start wound care tomorrow which is a whole new ball game.
Daiquiri appreciates everyone's concern and care but asks to refrain from
calling at this time. I will send you updates just as soon as I get them.
Personally, I would like to ask each of you to take a moment and pray the following:
Dear Lord,
Please hold John and Daiquiri Richard in your arms of comfort. I pray that you give the doctors and staff the knowledge to be able to identify the precise strain of bacteria TODAY and to find the precise antibiotic to stop the bacteria from ravaging the rest of his body. Give them strength and faith to weather this ordeal with Your help.
This I pray in Your name, Father, Amen. _________________ Live To Fish Tomorrow... Fish To Live Today

Sounds more like Vibrio. If they haven't figured it out by now, you ought to let them know ASAP. Sure sounds like vibrio to me. I had a staph infection on some cuts on my hand after cleaning fish and checking the crab traps at the folks house.

Tyler, I thought about Vibrio V. when I heard this and immediately passed it on. Fortunately, as I'm told, the physicians were familar with Vibrio and were/are looking for it.
Thanks!
Let's all be safe and grateful of our personal well beings! Amen. _________________ Live To Fish Tomorrow... Fish To Live Today

Amen, and keep us posted as to his progress. I hope they find out what it is in time. _________________ Give a man a fish, feed him for a day.

I haven't talked with Daiquiri since this morning. But as I was driving home after work, I heard Channel 6 on the radio reporting the story. Apparently, Capt. Richard was fishing in Baffin Bay. _________________ Live To Fish Tomorrow... Fish To Live Today
